In 1901 Gibraltar was a massive garrison: The Boer War had ended, the Coronation Festivities for H.M.King Edward VII and Queen Alexandrie were taking place: his brother The Duke of Connaught was the Grand Master.
Such was the affection felt by the Military of the time, a group of Officers from various sources, such R.A.S.C. Royal Engineers and the Cameron's etc. decided to form a lodge, The petition having been accepted, Duke of Connaught was approached, to lend his name to the new lodge, this he was pleased to do.
The lodge was consecrated on the 31st of May 1902, with great rejoicing there were approximately seventy brethren present. A telegram was received from the Grand Master wishing them every success granting the Lodge a Warrant. The Officers being present were appointed, the Lodge was now in being.
The Connaught Lodge continued with great enjoyment to all until 1915: the commencement of the Great War.
The severe loss of serving personnel and their replacement, seriously depleted the military, personnel of the Gibraltar Garrison, Connaught Lodge suffered its first serious decline. At this time the Royal Naval were making full use of Gibraltar as a staging post. The fortunes of the Lodge having returned. Connaught Lodge today caters for all good men, and have met continuously since May 1902.
It was continously a dinning Lodge until 1939- when the Brethren were about to sit for supper, the Air Raid Sirens were sounded, the brethren retiring to their places of duty, not to sit again until 1946.
